Bird conservation project in Tyrol

Interhome is doubling its number of holiday homes!

With a bird conservation project in Tyrol, we are expanding our successful collaboration with our partner BEESark.

50% of all bird species in Austria are threatened with extinction. To create new habitats for bird families, we are expanding our successful collaboration with our partner BEESark from Austria to include a bird protection project in Tyrol.

For this purpose, we have placed 1,065 bird nesting boxes on fruit trees to specifically attract and support additional bird families in the region. On June 20 and 21, 2024, 11 Interhome employees personally placed the last few nesting boxes in the Innsbruck region. From the bird experts, they learned valuable tips and tricks for the specific installation on trees, the best placement, and the optimal height of the nesting boxes to attract as many birds as possible.

Each nesting box is labeled with a number, regularly maintained, cleaned, and checked for its feathered inhabitants. The monitoring is recorded annually in a detailed report. Over a period of at least three years, we are creating new habitats for bird families.

Rewards for a successful nest box search

To involve our holiday guests in Tyrol in the bird protection project, we have designated a number of nesting boxes that can be visited on-site. We have marked the selected nesting boxes on a map, which we have made available for you here. Those who would like to can search for the nesting boxes using the map and let us know by e-mail lovenature@interhome.group, which different symbols you have found. The search finding at least two different symbols will be rewarded with a voucher for the next booking with Interhome.

We look forward to welcoming young bird families to our nesting boxes and the report from the bird experts.

17 June 2024: A Week of Bees, Birds, and Enthusiasm

Once again, 11 female employees from various countries embarked on a journey to Carinthia and Tyrol to visit the biodiversity projects of the Interhome and to lend a helping hand.

During the educational week focusing on biodiversity and sustainability, they assisted the Hribar family in the mountains above the Trögener Ridge, helping out in the garden and forest, and taking the opportunity to learn more about the flowering meadow project in Carinthia as well as the launch of the new birdhouse project in Tyrol. Matthias R. Breznik, founder and owner of BEESark, accompanied them:

"[…] BEESark greatly appreciates that Interhome not only finances its projects but also personally inspects them on-site with a dedicated group of employees, actively participating in the work. The group’s commitment and positive attitude are truly inspiring. Particularly noteworthy is Interhome’s genuine interest and personal inspection of regional environmental protection projects, which is reflected in their energetic support of various initiatives."

Klemens Boeck, a fruit farming consultant at the Tyrolean Chamber of Agriculture, was also present during a visit to a participating farm and shared his impressions of the project:

"From the perspective of fruit farming, I find it valuable that this project specifically supports songbirds, particularly tits. During the breeding season, songbirds make a significant contribution to pest control (aphids, caterpillars, etc.), which is difficult to quantify in absolute terms but is certainly appreciated throughout the orchards.“

Our employees also gained many valuable experiences:

"During our trip to Austria, I was amazed at the impact Interhome has already made together with Beesark.
The interaction with the owners of the fields is admirable as we work together to promote insect and bee diversity. The initiative to work with schoolchildren to install birdhouses, together with the  company we visited that makes the birdhouses, was also an eye-opening experience.
It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that everyone should experience."
- Nita Viaene, Interhome Belgium

" I had an incredible time learning about our bird and bee sustainability project and deeply appreciated the warm welcome from our Austrian partners (#Beesark). The volunteering experience, especially planting new trees, was immensely rewarding, and I enjoyed every moment, even when stepping through the stinging nettles. This experience has definitely inspired me to participate in more volunteering and sustainability projects.
Being part of this trip has greatly increased my appreciation  of our sustainability efforts and also allowed me to experience the stunning beauty of Austria and it's inspiring local tourism." - Wai Wai Lee, Interhome England

"Unforgettable week in Austria! It was a time of sharing and bonding with colleagues around the theme of sustainability. We met passionate and dedicated individuals who inspired us with new ideas and virtuous practices. I loved the concept of creating a nurturing cycle by caring for the land with plants that support bee development, and using the land’s produce for local farmers. In our connected and urban lives, we often forget that by fostering more connections with each other, we can reduce our impact on the planet." - Gaëlle Roulland, Interhome Schweiz
