Portimão - Must-see attractions
Rock Beach
Striking rock formations adorn Praia da Rocha. The 1.5-kilometer-long beach is located directly on the shopping promenade of Portimão and is accordingly well-visited. Even without much wind, there is always a strong surf here, which attracts surfers to the coastal section. On the beach, guests can rent loungers and umbrellas for a fee. Those who have worked up an appetite after swimming can visit one of the surrounding beach restaurants. Partygoers can turn night into day in the many themed bars on the promenade.
João de Arens Beach
Nature lovers will be thrilled by the beach located about 6 kilometers from the center of Portimão. The hidden coastal section in the Algarve impresses with its cliffs and bizarre rock formations. Some of the naturally formed grottos can even be swum into. Soft, calm water invites swimming in the small bay. Near the cliffs, there are a few shady spots. However, visitors should remember to bring a sunshade and provisions, as there is no infrastructure at the natural beach.
Church of Our Lady of the Conception
The church, built in the Gothic style in the 15th century, was fundamentally redesigned after an earthquake in 1755. The ornate Gothic portal and the magnificent Baroque bell tower characterize the imposing appearance of the house of worship. Columns with Tuscan capitals divide three naves. Lovers of sacred art will be delighted by the magnificent main altar with its gilded wood carvings. Also marvel at the masterfully crafted sculptures of the Apostles from the 16th century, the crucifixes made of ivory and ebony, and the baptismal font in the Manueline style.
Three Castles Beach
Praia dos Três Castelos is a magnificent beach in Portimão on the Portuguese Algarve. It is located next to the famous Praia da Rocha and offers a bit less hustle and bustle, but has excellent facilities such as a sunbed rental or a bar. The beach can be reached via a staircase from the Miradouro dos Três Castelos viewpoint. This, in turn, allows a wonderful view of the sea as well as the beautiful beach with its pretty rock formations, where seabirds frolic.
Vau Beach
Families with children appreciate Praia do Vau, as the beach is monitored by lifeguards in the summer. A ramp conveniently leads to the coastal section. Nearby, visitors find all the amenities for a relaxing day at the beach, such as a snack bar and several restaurants within walking distance. At the beach, guests can rent loungers and umbrellas for a fee. Those seeking a break from swimming and sunbathing can take a walk in the cliffs above the coastal section. The view of the Atlantic and surrounding hidden coves is spectacular.
Portimao Museum
The focus of the Portimao Museum is on the development of the fish canning industry in the Algarve, from landing at the port to the finished can. Marvel at the conveyor belts, wire baskets, and ovens in the recreated processing hall and listen to the original factory sounds. Video recordings with eyewitness interviews and an entertaining documentary also transport the visitor to the fishery-influenced working world of that time. In a cistern deep beneath the factory, you can learn about the rich animal and plant life of the Algarve through image and sound animations.
