Lake Garda - 5 most beautiful natural sights

Grottoes of Catullus

The Grottoes of Catullus are located near the center of the sun-drenched town of Sirmione on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The ruins of the once-imposing Roman villa are partially quite well preserved and surrounded by picturesque olive gardens. The location of the Grottoes of Catullus is also unique: at the very tip of the Sirmione peninsula. The Grottoes of Catullus can only be reached by a footpath, which leads past the Scaliger Castle, another attraction of Sirmione. From the Roman villa, you have a wonderful view over the lake and the mountains. In the grottoes, you can marvel at well-preserved mosaic pieces, frescoes, and everyday objects.

Alto Garda Bresciano Park

The Alto Garda Bresciano Nature Park stretches approximately from Limone Sul Garda on the lakeshore to Valvestino inland. A dense network of hiking trails traverses the park. It is scenically impressive with its mix of Mediterranean-influenced surroundings near the shore and alpine hill ranges towards the interior. Fantastic lake panoramas are an added bonus. There is a difference of about 1,900 meters in elevation from the shores of Lake Garda to the 1,976-meter-high Monte Caplone, the highest peak in the park, which can be climbed by experienced hiking enthusiasts. But the wide valleys with their gentle hills and the small Italian mountain villages that keep appearing also make you really want to go on hikes or mountain bike tours.

Verone Waterfalls

Since the year 1874, the Varone Waterfall near Riva del Garda has been open to visitors. At that time, the first paths were constructed to allow for a safe visit. In the lower gorge, there is a popular viewpoint. Another can be found in the upper gorge, about 40 meters higher. The building at the entrance of the waterfall was designed by the famous architect Giancarlo Maroni. A narrow footbridge and paths lead into the natural wonder. The lower gorge is about 55 meters deep. At the end, the water creates a roaring noise, as it plunges 98 meters down.
