Rügen - 8 special hiking trails
High Shore Path from Sassnitz to Königsstuhl
The Baltic Sea island of Rügen is known for its beautiful panoramas. A particular highlight is the chalk cliffs, which are considered the island's landmark. The most famous rock formation is the Königsstuhl. From Sassnitz, you can reach it via a moderately difficult hiking route that offers a wealth of attractions. Enjoy the view from the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt viewpoint and climb up to the Kieler Bach, which cascades into the Baltic Sea in a four-meter-high waterfall. Also worth seeing are the remnants of the so-called Wissower Klinken: The chalk cliffs slid up to 20 meters into the sea in 2005.
Circular trail Putgarten – Vitt – Cape Arkona
Discover Cape Arkona on a circular hike starting in the coastal town of Putgarten. On family-friendly paths, it first goes through the rural interior of the island to the small fishing village of Vitt directly on the coast. Treat yourself to a break with a summer refreshment in the Baltic Sea. From Vitt, the path leads north to Cape Arkona. Enjoy the impressive sea panorama from the viewpoint above the cliffs. Continue along the north coast of Wittow until you turn back inland to Putgarten. Plan around 2.5 hours for this approximately 8-kilometer-long tour.
From Binz to the Granitz Hunting Lodge
The Granitz Hunting Lodge was built in the first half of the 19th century and is today the most visited castle in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Particularly impressive is the central tower, at the top of which a spiral staircase with 154 cast-iron steps leads. As an alternative to the train ride, you can walk towards the hunting lodge. The circular hiking trail measures about 10 kilometers in length and takes you from the Baltic Sea resort of Binz up to the castle. The path, with its gentle inclines, is also suitable for families and leads you through the coastal forest landscape in the interior of the island. Plan for about three hours of walking time.
Sellin - Baabe
Your hike begins in Sellin at the end of Wilhelmstraße at the spa hotel. Wilhelmstraße is considered the promenade of Sellin and is known for its villas from the spa architecture era. The route from Sellin to Baabe runs along the high shore and offers a wealth of charming panoramas over the Baltic Sea. The route is only suitable for hiking and is unsuitable for cyclists. Shortly before Baabe, it descends to the beach. Take a short break and enjoy the beauty of the Baltic Sea beach. The return path leads along the water to the pier of Sellin.
Selliner Lake Circular Hike
This circular hike of about 8 kilometers leads around the Selliner See and passes through pretty little villages, past an idyllic old mill, and through a beautiful Bodden landscape. There is a diverse flora and fauna to discover, offering a peaceful idyll. The path includes the charming villages of Altensien and Moritzdorf and also offers the great opportunity to cross the Baaber Bek with a rowing boat ferry. This connects the lake with a bay in the Rügischer Bodden, which can also be explored this way. Afterwards, a path leads back along the beach to Sellin.
Zicker - Schoritzer Wiek - Palmer Ort
For the hike from Zicker to Palmer Ort, it's best to start at the parking lot in Zicker. From here, it quickly leads into the Schoritzer Wiek nature reserve, where rare birds can be seen. Then it goes to the beach at the Greifswalder Bodden and further to the steep coast. In clear weather, you can see the Polish city of Swinemünde on Usedom in the distance. You can swim at the Yellow Shore. You reach Palmer Ort via the nature trail "Discover Your World," which leads through a coastal protection forest. The bike path takes you back across fields to Zicker.
Route Wittow - a hike through history
On the tour marked with a blue crossbar on the Wittow Peninsula, you embark on a journey into history. You start in Altenkirchen, where after leaving the village, you discover the Nobbin megalithic tomb at the Riesenberg. A paved path leads you to the romantic fishing village of Vitt. The small octagonal chapel in Vitt is a tranquil place to pause. You then proceed along a high shore path towards the steep coast: The view of Cape Arkona will surely remain in your memory for a long time. Here you can see the Jaromarsburg: It was one of the most important fortifications of the Rani.
Hiddensee Hike
The main places on the island of Hiddensee include Vitte and Neuendorf. There are 5 km between the two communities. Start a great circular hike from Vitte via Neuendorf and back. You start in Vitte and hike via the Wiesenweg and then the Dünenweg to the south. If you wish, make a detour to the lighthouse in Gellen. The red and white beacon is about 12 m high. On the way back, the route leads through the Dünenheide and through forests past a small lake. The Dünenheide is a nature reserve with an area of 75 ha.
