Wild Coast

The Côte Sauvage is located on the French peninsula of Quiberon in Brittany. It is an approximately 8 km long mix of steep cliffs, small bays, and bizarre rock formations. However, swimming here is mostly too dangerous and also prohibited. There is a wonderful coastal hiking trail that promises many breathtaking viewpoints. It leads from Beg en Aud in the north to the town of Quiberon in the south, passing by menhirs and a beautiful heathland over gigantic cliffs and offers stunning views.

The plans for Port Haliguen date back to the 18th century, and its current form, including the lighthouse, was completed in 1848. Stroll along the promenade and admire the small boats and old buildings. Right next to the harbor is the charming Plage du Porigo, one of the most popular beaches in Quiberon, which invites you to sunbathe, swim, and relax along the French Bay of Biscay, especially between June and September.

Belle-Île-en-Mer

The centerpiece of Belle-Île-en-Mer is the harbor of Le Palais, whose citadel is clearly visible upon entry. In about 20 minutes, you can reach the quiet harbor village of Sauzon from Le Palais. Here you can refresh yourself before continuing to the lighthouse on the Pointe des Poulains peninsula. The lighthouse is connected to the rest of the island by a ford and can therefore only be reached at low tide.

Stained glass windows worth seeing: Chapelle Saint-Julien

In the north of Quiberon stands the Saint-Julien Chapel, which, after a varied history, owes its current appearance to the reconstruction in 1859. After serving as a warehouse for some time, it has shone in new splendor since 1928. Highlights include the stained glass windows depicting motifs such as the miracle of the fish catch.

Enticing beach walk at Plage du Goviro

At the tip of the Quiberon Peninsula, Plage du Goviro nestles in a small bay. In summer, the clear water invites you to swim, but even in cold weather, a visit is worthwhile. You can enjoy the rugged beauty of the Breton coast with its shell-covered rocks here with all your senses.

Where time stands still: Village de Kerniscob

A 3 km walk north from Quiberon takes you to the village of Village de Kerniscob. It enchants its guests with its typical Breton charm, with small houses that seem to cling to the rugged cliffs. You hike along the jagged rocks through a primeval landscape interspersed with moors.

Stroll around the harbor with all amenities: Port Haliguen

The restored marina Port Haliguen east of Quiberon invites you to stroll along the marina. The white lighthouse is an attractive landmark. Enjoy the view of the masts swaying in the swell while the kids let off steam on the playground. In September, the Heritage Days take place.

Day 1

The port city of Quiberon is located on the peninsula of the same name in the west of Brittany. Leisure activities here are extensive: you can engage in water sports and outdoor activities, and also experience numerous historical sights and cultural events. Your tour on the first day begins in Port Maria, the main port of Quiberon. Around the harbor, there are numerous attractions. Fascinating is the Chateau Turpault, built in 1904, which rises on a promontory and marks the beginning of the coastal section Cote sauvage. A little further inland, you will encounter the cultic Menhir de la Pointe des Gueritte. A walk along the promenade takes you past the Grande Plage beach and the casino. In about half an hour, you will reach Port-Haliguen, another port of Quiberon with a lighthouse. From the nearby viewing platform Pointe de Conguel, you have a beautiful view over the Bay of Quiberon.

Day 2

On your second day, you take a trip to one of the offshore islands. Ferries to the islands of Belle-Île, Île d’Houat, and Île d’Hœdic depart from the main harbor. In the summer, you can take a boat tour from Port-Haliguen to the Gulf of Morbihan. The ferry ride to Belle-Île takes about 45 minutes. It is the largest of the Breton islands. Behind its rocky coasts lie fertile meadows and fields. In the main town of Le Palais, you visit the pyramid-shaped citadel from the 17th century, which houses a museum. In the far east, you discover the Kerdonis lighthouse, and on the west coast of the island, you admire the Aiguilles de Port-Coton. These rock needles rise from the sea and are a popular photo motif. The islands Île d’Houat and Île d’Hœdic are particularly interesting destinations because of their prehistoric menhirs and stone block graves.

Day 3

On the third day of your vacation, you delve into the fascinating past of Brittany. Just a half-hour drive from Quiberon, you will find Carnac, the home of the megaliths. Here stand the famous stone rows, comprising a total of about 3,000 menhirs. In addition, not far from Carnac, there are also large stone tombs and stone enclosures to explore. Before heading to the megaliths, visit the Museum of Prehistory in the town center. Here you will learn interesting facts about the megalithic stone structures. In the afternoon, take a detour to the neighboring town of La Trinité-sur-Mer. It is separated from Carnac by the Anse de Kerdual bay. You can reach La Trinité-sur-Mer by bicycle in about 20 minutes. The coastal town is a popular vacation destination and is especially appreciated by sailors for its marina. Worth seeing is the Allée couverte Mané-Roullarde, a Neolithic gallery grave on a hill above the harbor.

Quiberon - Climate

The summers in Quiberon are pleasantly warm, the winters cold, though not icy. The best time for a holiday apartment or house on the peninsula is the low-rainfall summer months of June to September. During this time, the average temperature rises to 19°C in July and August. The sea, which can reach up to 20°C, also invites swimming in the summer. With an average of 11 to 15°C, the months of March to May are quite cool, but not rainy. The lowest average temperature is recorded in the winter month of January at 10°C. The rainy months of October to February are less suitable for excursions.
