Croatia - Game of Thrones Filming Locations
The fantasy series Game of Thrones is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The story takes place on the continent of Westeros, in the Seven Kingdoms, beyond the Wall, and on the vast continent of Essos. The magical landscapes play a big part in the series' appeal, but where are these locations in real life, and where can you find the impressive filming sites? Many of the most important scenes were filmed in stunning locations throughout Croatia. This is a great reason for all fans of the series to pay them a visit. Cities like Split and Dubrovnik are truly worth the trip, offering the chance to discover where Daenerys Targaryen hid two of her dragons or from where they soared into the skies.

Dubrovnik
Many scenes were filmed in the impressive fortresses of Lovrijenac, Minceta, and Bokar in Dubrovnik. Additionally, many other locations in the historic Old Town served as the setting for King's Landing and the Red Keep over five seasons. Dubrovnik is probably the most important filming location that you should stop by. It is accessible by plane, car, or bus. Unfortunately, there is no train connection to the city. Be sure to admire the mighty city walls and immerse yourself in the charming maze of narrow streets in the city center.
Dubac
The quarry near Dubac, located about 4 km outside of Dubrovnik, was used in the first episode of season 2 for the march through the Red Waste to the city of Qarth. The production also constructed the gates of this city here. This quarry is quite difficult to find, so it is recommended to ask locals for directions. Extra tip: The Dubac cemetery is not far from the quarry and is easier to locate. Dubac is a hidden gem, even among Game of Thrones fans.
Lokrum
The lush island of Lokrum lies just off the coast of Dubrovnik. It was declared a nature reserve in 1964. Scenes of the city of Qarth, located near the Jade Sea, were filmed in this paradise. Tour boats depart every 20 minutes, and the crossing from the Dubrovnik harbor takes only 15 minutes. A perfect viewpoint can be found at the highest point of the small island, which is easy to reach and offers a breathtaking view of the entire national park.
Split
The beautiful harbor city of Split served as a filming location for Game of Thrones starting from season 4. The Diocletian's Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, was used as the setting for the throne room. Daenerys trained her dragons here. The throne room is located in the cellars of the palace, which are essentially its heart. The scene "Kill the Masters" was filmed in part of the city museum. Split is a charming, historical city waiting to be discovered. Due to the Mediterranean climate, the best time to visit is between May and September.
Klis
The medieval Klis Fortress, located about 14 km from Split, was the filming location for the famous siege scene of Meereen. From Klis, you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city of Split, making it easy to immerse yourself in the world of the show. A shuttle bus will take you directly from Split to the fortress, which is worth a visit even if you're not a die-hard Game of Thrones fan.
Trsteno
The small village of Trsteno, located a few kilometers north of Dubrovnik, is home to a stunning garden, the Arboretum. This location served as the garden of King’s Landing for the film crew, as it contains Croatia's oldest collection of exotic trees. Do you remember the intense conversations between Lady Olenna, Sansa, and Margaery? Those were filmed in this extraordinary botanical garden, one of the oldest arboretums in Eastern Europe. The garden dates back to the 15th century and is impressive with its still-functional aqueduct.
Sibenik
The Renaissance city of Sibenik was transformed into Braavos in season 5 of the series, with the small fishing port of Mandroc serving as its harbor. Interestingly, the authenticity of the filming location was highlighted by the sailing and swordsmanship skills of the local residents of Sibenik, as the Braavosi in the show are similarly skilled in both sailing and sword fighting. The cathedral of St. James, one of the most impressive landmarks in the city, also appears in Game of Thrones.
Zrnovnica and Lavcevic
An old stone mill in Zrnovnica is a well-known grill restaurant with a beautiful garden, where a battle scene and Daenerys' speech against slavery were filmed in season 4. Not far from it is the Lavcevic quarry, which served as the backdrop for the scene where Daenerys enters Meereen with the Unsullied army. The restaurant is called Antonicin and is located about 15 km inland from Split.
Kastel Gomilica
In season 5, Kastel Gomilica Fortress, a 16th-century monastery in Kastela near Split, appears in the memorable scene where Arya is portrayed as a shell seller. This was part of her training to become "No One" and remains memorable to every Game of Thrones fan. The monastery, along with the attached church, is one of the oldest in the region. Benedictine nuns built the church in the 12th century, dedicating it to Saints Kuzma and Damjan.
Trogir
Be sure to visit the villas of Trogir, another well-known filming location for the series in Croatia, like Split or Dubrovnik. Trogir represents the trading port of Qarth in season 2, and who could forget that it was the place where Khaleesi’s dragons were held captive? Also, don't miss the beautiful St. Dominic Monastery, where additional scenes were filmed.
