Holiday Homes in the Valais Region
If you love the Winter and love skiing, the Valais region is the perfect destination for you. The Valais is one of the 26 cantons of Switzerland, situated in the south west of the country, and is widely known for the Matterhorn and resorts such as Saas Fee, Verbier and Zermatt. The Matterhorn peak, near Zermatt, is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Swiss mountains. Take a trip on the cable car from the Klein Matterhorn up to Zermatt or the summer ski area of Breithorn. The western part of Valais is French speaking whilst the Eastern area is German speaking. It is a fairly thinly populated area with the majority of residents speaking French. Valais is also well known for its wine and fruit cognac production and also boasts Europe’s tallest gravity dam, located at Grande Dixence. Flights can be taken to the small airport in Sion but the main modes of transport in the region are road and rail. Valais is home to the longest land tunnel in the world, the Lotschberg Base Tunnel, which connect the town of Frutigen and Bern by rail. You can also enjoy the extensive network of mountain railways and cable cars through the mountains, with the scenic rail route across the Furka Pass originating in Valais.
The 4000 m high mountain peaks, all 45 of them, tower over this beautiful area of Switzerland, making it a beautiful and unique setting for winter sports. There is always good snow covering the 2400 kms of slopes and providing fantastic sporting possibilities. Besides all the opportunities for great skiing, the Valais region can also be enjoyed at a more leisurely pace with picturesque hikes through snowy forests or snowshoe trekking across the alpine countryside. More than 8,000 kms of marked hiking trails pass by fresh mountain streams and Alpine lakes, while mountain bike trails wind through thick forest and over green mountain slopes. Even in the height of summer, you can still satisfy a taste for skiing up on the glacier slopes. The Valais enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year, helping to make unique tasting wines along with other amazing natural products such as sweet and tasty fruit and savory spices. Finish your day enjoying the many regional specialities and excellent wines in one of the many mountain restaurants or relax on a sunny terrace whilst breathing in the fresh mountain air and enjoying the stunning mountain views.
