Albufeira was a small fishing village until the arrival of tourism in the 1960s. It was known as Baltum in Roman times and has the remains of a Roman castle, which is often lit up for festivals. The old town still remains the essence of Albufeira, despite the many hotels and holiday properties. It’s narrow, cobbled streets still wind up the hillside, with small character houses lining the roadside.
