Renaturation of La Gruère peat bog (Switzerland)

Interhome offers all guests the opportunity to make a voluntary climate protection contribution. Your voluntary climate protection contribution flows into the project "Peat Bog Restoration in the la Gruère Nature Reserve."

For this project, we are collaborating with our partner myclimate. With projects of the highest quality, the Swiss foundation is promoting measurable climate protection and sustainable development worldwide.

Our project

The project "Peat bog restoration in the nature reserve 'La Gruère'" contributes to the restoration of a unique peat bog in the Jura. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions, promotes biodiversity, improves water management, and supports the local construction industry.

La Gruère is a nationally significant peat bog. The carbon offset project closes an existing financing gap and plays a central role in the comprehensive renaturation initiative. This ambitious project, covering an area of 55 hectares and peat layers up to 9 meters deep, is being implemented in several stages. The first stage was completed in 2018, with further stages planned between 2024 and 2028.

The importance of peatlands for the carbon balance of the soil is enormous - even though they only make up three percent of the land surface, they store 30 percent of the soil carbon worldwide. Restoration has positive effects on flood protection, water quality, microclimate, and landscape design and provides recreational opportunities for the population. Additionally, peatlands provide habitat for rare or endangered animal and plant species.

The rewetting of drained moors is crucial to stop CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere. The calculation standard max.moor is used to estimate the CO2 savings achieved through restoration projects.

Although the protection of the high moors is included in the Swiss constitution, financing of renaturation projects is often difficult. A climate protection contribution offers a solution for supporting restoration projects and protect the environment. By making your climate protection contribution, you are making a huge contribution.
