Situated south of Cologne, the eastern part of the Ardennes massif is distin-guished by its varied natural sites: the plateau and the immense pine forests alternate with the hilly countryside and peat bogs. Rivers and torrents cut through steep cliffs. The extinct craters, basaltic hilltops and lakes (Maare) are typical of this region.
